At Earith Primary School, we teach phonics using the phases and their progression as outlined in Letters and Sounds (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/letters-and-sounds).
This structure is also supplemented with multi-sensory approaches from Jolly Phonics (https://www.jollylearning.co.uk/) which includes actions and songs and the app, ‘Teach Your Monster to Read’ (https://www.teachyourmonstertoread.com).
Phonics is taught daily in Year R & 1 for 20 minutes a session - following the ‘review, teach, practice, apply’ structure.
Sounds that have been learnt that week are also sent home for parents to further consolidate learning.
We ensure there are regular opportunities throughout the curriculum to use and practice phonics within daily provision (specifically targeted to individuals and through child-led activities) in an effort to embed early reading skills.
Phonics is also taught more discreetly in other year groups as appropriate e.g. as part of guided reading, spelling, sentence rehearsal or as a separate intervention – dependent upon the need of the children.
If you would like further support or information in phonics, please come and see the team.
